Exploring the Innovations and Gameplay Dynamics in Ubisoft’s Upcoming Open-World Avatar Title.

Set against the backdrop of Pandora, just before the events of “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” offers gamers the opportunity to explore the uncharted Western Frontier of Pandora. As a Na’vi, kidnapped as a child by the RDA and trained as a soldier, players awaken fifteen years later in this action-packed standalone narrative. Their mission: to unite the Frontier clans against the imposing RDA forces.
Game Rant recently delved into “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” with approximately 2.5 hours of gameplay, completing four primary missions, embarking on a few side quests, and immersing themselves in the environment. Notably, exploration is at the heart of this gaming experience, presenting a fresh twist on open-world design that breaks from the typical Ubisoft formula.
The game introduces a Health and Energy System, where health aligns with its traditional meaning, while energy is equivalent to stamina and is replenished by consuming food, which can also grant buffs when cooked.

Upon initial examination, the in-game map appears as bustling as any Ubisoft title, with regions marked for resource gathering and wide areas denoted as swamps or other distinct terrains. Notably, unexplored regions are obscured by clouds, awaiting players’ discovery. However, unlike traditional Ubisoft games, “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” avoids overwhelming players with an abundance of icons.
An intriguing aspect is the game’s two modes of play. Players can opt for a standard guided mode with waypoints for quest navigation, or they can engage in a context clues mode, relying solely on the hints provided for travel. These cues, such as “a giant stone monolith covered in purple flowers,” offer a novel approach to quest guidance.
The game’s focus on exploration is apparent in the meticulously crafted environment. Players encounter both helpful and dangerous flora as they traverse the forests, each plant presenting a unique interaction. Plants range from explosive ones and shock-inducing specimens to puzzle-solving obstacles, speed-boosting flora, and more. The Na’vi characters’ ability to traverse tree limbs and treetops adds a dynamic dimension to the exploration, emphasizing agility and connection with nature.
The player character is also accompanied by an Ikran (a banshee-like flying creature) for swift travel. Though it becomes available after a few hours of gameplay, some may find it arrives late in the game. Nevertheless, the Ikran flight is exhilarating, offering players a unique perspective and enhancing travel speed. Naming the Ikran adds a humorous touch to the experience, with the character acknowledging the chosen name in dialogues.
“Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” features an engaging narrative, which Game Rant sampled by completing four main missions. The tasks ranged from resolving issues with the Klingor clan to bonding with the Ikran, confronting flying machines, and launching an assault on an RDA base. The mission involving climbing the Ikran Rookery showcases the game’s vertical design, incorporating environmental elements and puzzle-solving.

Combat is fast-paced and entertaining, with an assortment of weapons at the player’s disposal. Firearms include heavy bows with standard and explosive arrows, longbows, an RDA assault rifle with multiple ammo types, and throwing sticks for explosives and status effects. Combat encounters are thrilling, and the game encourages players to utilize the environment strategically.
However, Game Rant observed that “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” lacks frequent combat encounters. While it offers exhilarating combat sequences, players might not engage in them as frequently as in other games, leading to potential downtime.
The gameplay also features skill trees, including Survivor, Warrior, Hunter, Rider, and Maker skills that align with different character progression paths.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora promises to deliver a unique open-world experience that defies the conventional Ubisoft formula. The game is set to launch on December 7, 2023, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
