Overwatch 2 Devs Reveal Top Mauga Counters

Blizzard developers unveil the best strategies to counter Mauga, Overwatch 2’s new Tank hero, in the popular hero shooter.

As Overwatch 2 introduces its formidable Tank hero, Mauga, the game’s developers have shared key strategies to effectively counter his powerful abilities. With Mauga’s recent unveiling during BlizzCon 2023, Overwatch fans have been eager to understand how to deal with this new addition to the hero roster.

Mauga’s impressive abilities have sparked concerns about his potential overpowered nature, particularly with his crowd control-defying Overrun ability and his capacity to provide healing to both himself and his allies. To address these concerns, Game Rant attended a group interview session at BlizzCon 2023, where Blizzard revealed some potential counterpicks to deal with Mauga.

According to the developers at Blizzard, two of the most effective Tank heroes to counter Mauga are D.Va and Sigma. Mauga’s Berserker passive ability, which allows him to heal upon landing critical hits, can be mitigated by both D.Va’s Defense Matrix and Sigma’s Kinetic Grasp, as they can intercept and negate Mauga’s chaingun projectiles, preventing his self-healing. Sigma’s Kinetic Grasp, which transforms projectiles into a personal shield, might offer a significant advantage against Mauga, although further gameplay will determine its effectiveness.

Additionally, Blizzard mentioned other Overwatch 2 heroes who could potentially counter Mauga, particularly against his Cage Fight Ultimate ability. Mauga’s Cage Fight Ultimate creates an enclosed ring that isolates heroes from the outside world, creating a barrier that blocks damage and healing attempts. Counterplay options include overwhelming Mauga by entering the ring after it’s deployed or shooting into it, considering its lack of a roof.

To address these scenarios, Blizzard suggested Damage heroes Pharah and Widowmaker as potential counters to Mauga. Widowmaker can utilize her grappling hook to reach a vantage point above the ring, while Pharah can hover over it and unleash missiles onto Mauga.

It’s worth noting that the Overwatch community will continue to explore and discover more effective strategies and counters as they gain hands-on experience with Mauga. While Mauga will join the permanent Overwatch 2 roster starting with Season 8 on December 5, players can currently enjoy a special free trial featuring this new Tank hero until November 5.
