Bethesda releases a new beta update for Starfield, tackling bugs including an unusual space matter hitching a ride and an exploit for infinite weapon generation.

Bethesda launched the 1.8.87 update for Starfield on December 1, a swift release following the recent 1.8.86 update that introduced features like the eat command and DLSS support to the expansive RPG.
The standout fix in this new update addresses a peculiar bug where players encountered unexpected company during their travels – celestial objects like asteroids getting stuck to their ship. While the exact cause remains unclear, this issue has been persisting since the game’s launch, with player reports dating back to September. The 1.8.87 patch provides a partial solution, removing space matter stuck behind the player, but the more extreme cases like New Atlantis following the player await a future update for a complete fix.
Additionally, this latest update corrects an exploit that allowed players to amass an abundance of firearms. The glitch involved constructing a Weapon Case in an Outpost, saving, and reloading, which consistently spawned random guns in the container. This exploit effectively allowed infinite weapon generation by reloading the game until desired firearms appeared in each new container, leveraging just one Polymer and two Titanium pieces for the case’s construction.
The 1.8.87 build is currently in beta:

Meaning the infinite weapon exploit persists for those on the beta channel. These experimental patches are exclusive to the Steam version, accessible by opting into the Starfield beta through the game’s Properties menu.
The PC Game Pass and Xbox Series X/S versions will receive this patch in the coming weeks. Similar to the previous beta update, which spent nine days in testing before its wider release, Bethesda’s beta-to-launch timeline serves as a reference.

Patch Notes for Starfield Beta Update 1.8.87:

Outpost:
- Fixed random guns failing to spawn in a newly created Weapon Case after loading a save.
This update continues Bethesda’s efforts to refine and improve the Starfield experience, with more fixes and enhancements expected in subsequent releases.
