The New Devil May Cry Lacks Any Notable Positive Aspects

The Disappointing Silence and Crossovers

Being a Devil May Cry fan hasn’t been rewarding lately. It’s been a long five years since the last installment, with Capcom seemingly forgetting Dante. Fans have had to make do with minor crossovers, like a Mii costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and an armor set in Monster Hunter World, but substantial content has been lacking.

A Letdown in Mobile Gaming

The wait ended with the release of Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat, a mobile game for iOS and Android by NebulaJoy. However, it’s far from what fans hoped for. The game epitomizes the negative stereotypes of mobile gaming. It strips away the essence of Devil May Cry – the iconic characters, engaging writing, and intricate combat – replacing them with a barrage of ads and gambling mechanics. It’s the embodiment of a predatory, profit-driven gacha game.

A Critique of Misdirected Game Design

Critiquing games usually requires a balanced view, but Peak of Combat makes it challenging. It appears to offer the classic Devil May Cry gameplay, but this is misleading. The actual gameplay revolves around navigating menus for more spending opportunities.

Lost Potential and a Hope for Better Mobile Games

I understand the irony of criticizing a mobile game for being ‘too mobile.’ Many mobile games fall into this trap, but they don’t have to. Mobile gaming can be a legitimate platform, as evidenced by Netflix’s impressive game library and Capcom’s own Monster Hunter Now, which isn’t entirely monetization-focused.

Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat was different in its earlier versions. Released in other regions since 2020, the original game emphasized traditional DMC elements like combos and weapon switching. However, the U.S. launch saw a game overrun with intrusive ads and prompts to spend real money.

There was potential in Peak of Combat, evident in its character-swapping mechanic, allowing seamless switches between Dante, Nero, Lady, and Virgil. However, the current state of the game feels like a disservice to the series, its fans, and anyone seeking a genuine gaming experience on mobile platforms.
