Doom’s journey since its original launch has seen it adapted for 25 different platforms. This count excludes the original MS-DOS version as it’s the native, not a ported, version. This figure also only accounts for official ports, not including the numerous unofficial ones that followed the release of Doom’s source code in the late ’90s.
Doom’s Versatility Across Different Media
The game’s adaptability is evident in its availability across various platforms, including PCs, consoles, and mobile devices. Initially, the PC version was adapted to several operating systems, many of which are now obsolete.
Consoles: A Major Platform for Doom
Out of the 25 platforms, 13 are consoles. The Sega Genesis 32X was the first to feature Doom in 1994, and the most recent ports were for Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 in 2019, marking the game’s 25th anniversary.
Handheld Gaming and Doom
Remarkably, only one handheld system officially supports Doom – the GameBoy Advance. Despite some notable censorship, this version maintains technical competence and is comparable to other versions in terms of gameplay experience.
