As anticipation for GTA 6 grows, Rockstar’s previous hits continue to dominate the gaming market. Grand Theft Auto 5 remains a sales powerhouse, moving 5 million units every quarter, while Red DeadRedemption 2 has earned the title of the best-selling game in the U.S. over the past seven years.
Take-Two’s latest financial report reveals that GTA 5 has now sold-in 215 million units, a 5 million increase from the last quarter. While “sold-in” includes units shipped to retailers but not yet purchased by consumers, the actual gap is minimal given the game’s consistent performance. Even a decade after release, GTA 5 continues to find new players.
Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to perform impressively, selling 4 million copies in the past three months alone. Industry analyst firm Circana reports that, based on dollar sales, it’s the top-selling game in the U.S. since its 2018 release. Despite this, many fans are still disappointed by Rockstar’s neglect of Red Dead Online, which hasn’t seen major updates in years.
On the other hand, GTA Online continues to receive regular updates, maintaining its massive player base. During an investor Q&A, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick described GTA 5 as the “standard-bearer for our industry,” a claim well-supported by the game’s continued success.
With both titles still performing strongly, expectations for GTA 6 are sky-high. Given Rockstar’s track record, many believe it could surpass even the staggering sales numbers of its predecessors.
