In a surprising turn of events, the long-awaited Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is back on track and set for release next fall, marking over four years since its original intended launch date.
Paradox Interactive has entrusted The Chinese Room, known for titles like Dear Esther and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, with the task of bringing this troubled RPG to fruition.
The journey of Bloodlines 2 has been tumultuous, with multiple delays and significant behind-the-scenes changes. Lead writer Brian Mitsoda and creative director Ka’ai Cluney were both ousted, leading to Hardsuit Labs being removed from the project entirely. It was then indefinitely delayed in 2021.

The Chinese Room’s involvement in the project was revealed, and while the specifics of Hardsuit Labs’ version remain undisclosed, the prospect of The Chinese Room’s narrative and atmosphere-focused expertise injected excitement into the project.
Alex Skidmore, creative director of Bloodlines 2, shared this sentiment, emphasizing his enthusiasm for working on this type of game. Skidmore, who previously worked on the Fable series, brings substantial RPG experience to the table.

Bloodlines 2 retains its original setting of Seattle, albeit now amidst a historic snowstorm, and promises a new code base with distinct gameplay mechanics and RPG systems.
The protagonist is no longer a recently-turned “thin blood” vampire but an “Elder” vampire, awakening from a lengthy torpor. This change adds depth to the character and offers a unique experience compared to the first game.

The Chinese Room’s vision for the game appears to balance established lore with player agency, promising an intriguing narrative journey. As fans eagerly await a more detailed gameplay reveal in January, the once-distant release of Bloodlines 2 next fall now seems tantalizingly close, reigniting hopes for a worthy successor to the cult classic original.
