The Witcher tabletop RPG, a long-running pen-and-paper adaptation of the beloved video game series, is facing a significant hiatus due to the development of The Witcher 4 (codenamed ‘Polaris’).
While this news disappoints fans, lead developer Cody Pondsmith explained that the pause is necessary, and they currently lack a timeframe for resuming development.

The reason behind this hiatus is the interconnected nature of The Witcher tabletop RPG and the video game series. The RPG is set between the second and third video games, and both development teams collaborate to ensure a consistent canon. Consequently, progress on the tabletop RPG is on hold until more details about The Witcher 4 are solidified.

It’s likely that the uncertainty surrounding The Witcher 4’s storyline and direction is a primary factor in the RPG’s delay. Pondsmith’s team has spent considerable time discussing The Continent’s lore and The Witcher franchise’s direction but concluded that it would be challenging, if not impossible, to continue the TTRPG line while maintaining alignment with CD Projekt Red’s upcoming plans.

However, fans need not despair, as Pondsmith affirmed that The Witcher tabletop RPG is not abandoned. Instead, the team will focus on creating free downloadable content for their website, centered on well-established Witcher canon concepts that won’t overlap with The Witcher 4’s narrative.

For newcomers interested in The Witcher tabletop RPG, there are existing resources to explore, including an Easy Mode booklet, the core rulebook, and four expansions. While the hiatus may be disappointing, it assures that future content aligns seamlessly with the evolving Witcher universe.
