Bethesda’s highly-anticipated space-based RPG, Starfield, has certainly made waves with its dedication to realism, offering players impressive feats like a physics engine capable of simulating thousands of cascading milk cartons and scientifically accurate zero-gravity gunfights. However, not everything in the game lives up to this commitment, as players have started to question the authenticity of its supposed Irish accents featured in the interactions with NPCs.
Numerous Starfield enthusiasts have been voicing their opinions on this matter, with Wesley Yin-Poole taking to Twitter to express his thoughts, stating, “The Irish accents in Starfield are… well, I’m left in disbelief, lol.” He accompanied his tweet with a short clip of a conversation with Dr. Flynn, which offers a rather unique auditory experience.
Some users responded in the comments, with one saying, “Honestly, I couldn’t even recognize that as an attempt at an Irish accent.” Another user tweeted, “While playing Starfield, my main gripe is the inclusion of multiple characters with absolutely dreadful fake Irish accents, doubling down on the disappointment from Fallout 4’s ‘Irish’ character.”
Even on the Starfield subreddit, fans seem far from convinced by the game’s efforts to authentically portray Irish characters. One user went as far as to say, “The Irish accents in this game are possibly the worst I’ve ever heard,” while another posted a simple yet poignant question: “Bethesda, why?”
Despite the criticism regarding these questionable accents, Starfield has achieved a remarkable milestone as Bethesda’s largest game launch to date, boasting over six million players on its launch day.
