Solo Leveling originates from a South Korean web novel penned by Chugong. Its serialization commenced on Kakao’s digital comic and fiction platform, KakaoPage, on July 25, 2016. Subsequently, it was fully published by D&C Media under their Papyrus label on November 4, 2016.
The web novel’s transition into a webtoon adaptation began on March 4, 2018, also on KakaoPage. It featured illustrations by Jang Sung-Rak (known as Dubu), the CEO of Redice Studio. The webtoon’s first season concluded on March 19, 2020, and the second season kicked off on August 1, 2020, ultimately concluding in December 2021 with its 179th chapter.
The storyline of Solo Leveling, as described on (MAL), is as follows:
A decade ago, the emergence of “the Gate” bridged the gap between the real world and a realm teeming with magic and menacing creatures. To counter these monstrous threats, ordinary individuals were endowed with superhuman abilities and christened as “Hunters.” Among them, twenty-year-old Sung Jin-Woo stands out, but not for his prowess—rather, he’s known as the “World’s Weakest,” possessing power far inferior even to the humble E-Rank Hunters. Despite this, Jin-Woo relentlessly battles monsters in low-ranking Gates to cover his mother’s mounting medical bills.
However, his wretched existence takes an astonishing turn when, after a disastrous mission that left him seemingly alone and near death, Jin-Woo awakens in a hospital room three days later, greeted by a perplexing floating screen before him. This enigmatic “Quest Log” presents him with an audacious and grueling training regimen, coupled with dire consequences for noncompliance. Initially hesitant due to the task’s daunting nature, Jin-Woo soon discovers that it might just catapult him into the ranks of the world’s most formidable Hunters.
