Relive the cult-classic Disney show in this remastered 16-bit game.
Disney’s Gargoyles, a cult-favorite animated series from the ’90s, has made a comeback with Gargoyles Remastered on the Nintendo Switch. Empty Clip Studios revamped this game, enhancing the original while adding a rewind feature, updated art, and music. While nostalgic fans will find enjoyment, it’s clear that Gargoyles hasn’t aged gracefully.
The game’s narrative is loosely based on the show’s plot but offers a shallower storytelling experience. You play as Goliath, the leader of an ancient clan of gargoyles who battles evil in modern-day Manhattan. The narrative is handled via still-image cutscenes, which are basic and lacking depth compared to the show’s lore.
Gameplay follows the standard side-scrolling action platformer format. Goliath has basic combat abilities, a double jump, and the ability to charge through weak walls. There are five (technically six) levels to complete, with a linear design that should take around an hour to clear.
Gargoyles is a product of its time, featuring outdated game design with enemies dealing high damage and scarce health pickups. The game’s difficulty is somewhat balanced with the addition of a rewind feature that allows players to retry challenging sections as many times as they’d like. While this makes the game more manageable, it also removes much of the original difficulty.
The game allows players to switch between the original Genesis version and a remastered version, offering a nostalgic trip or a more modern take on the game. The remastered version, while fine, lacks the original’s atmosphere.
Gargoyles Remastered is missing gallery content, such as concept art and developer interviews, present in similar Disney game re-releases. This standalone release seems a bit out of place and perhaps would have fit better as DLC for the Disney Classic Games Collection.
While Gargoyles Remastered provides some entertainment, its flaws and short length may not be worth the price for everyone. It’s best suited for fans of the Gargoyles show and those looking for a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
