After Four Weeks of Terror, Mewtwo Y Receives Long-Awaited Nerfs

Mewtwo Y’s oppressive rule over the Pokemon Unite landscape has come to an end after a grueling two-month period that felt like an eternity for players seeking enjoyment in the game. In a recent patch, the development team has made crucial adjustments to bring Mewtwo Y in line with the rest of the roster, a much-needed balancing act given the game’s history of precarious character balance.
Throughout the last two years, Pokemon Unite has seen its fair share of overpowered characters. From the era of Dragonite, where every team needed one to secure Zapdos, to the dominance of Tsareena, Glaceon, Tyranitar, and Lucario in their respective roles, and not to forget the tumultuous reign of Zacian earlier in the year, Mewtwo Y outshone them all. What set Mewtwo Y apart was the lack of skill required to harness its overwhelming power.

The issue with Mewtwo Y lies in its ability to scale power through basic attacks. Each successful hit increases its special attack and attack speed, and after 12 hits, it temporarily evolves into Mega Mewtwo Y, gaining a substantial boost in special attack, attack speed, HP, and movement speed. Even without factoring in its other abilities, including its devastating Unite move, Mewtwo Y became a menace that could be effortlessly wielded by anyone capable of pressing the A button and moving around the map.
This combination of simplicity and overpowered capabilities made Mewtwo Y a scourge in Pokemon Unite ever since its release in August. Over the last two months, players encountered opponents with sub-50 percent win rates who effortlessly dominated matches with Mewtwo Y. Up until the recent patch, Mewtwo Y boasted a staggering 55 percent win rate and a 58 percent pick rate, leading to a high likelihood of encountering it and a high likelihood of losing.

The patch introduced a plethora of nerfs for Mewtwo Y, with the most significant change being the complete removal of its critical hit ability. Its critical-hit rate, which previously scaled from five to ten percent, is now a flat zero percent, eliminating its massive 3x damage spikes. Additionally, reductions were made to its special attack, future sight damage, and the bonuses from using the recover ability. While Mewtwo Y remains powerful, it should no longer be the automatic choice for easy victories.
Another significant nerf to Mewtwo Y is indirectly tied to Blissey, its partner in crime. Blissey received its own set of nerfs, including a 20 percent reduction to the shield provided by its Unite Move. With these adjustments, the threat of Mewtwo Y wreaking havoc on the battlefield has been significantly reduced.
Although it is exciting to see Mewtwo Y brought down to a more reasonable power level, it is difficult to ignore the prolonged wait for these changes. Mewtwo Y’s overpowered nature was evident from the beginning, with data supporting the community’s belief that it had a negative impact on the game. With previous incidents like Zacian’s dominance earlier in the year, it was expected that the development team, Timi Studio Group, would have learned from these experiences. As the game evolves, the introduction of new Legendary Pokemon should be more carefully balanced to avoid the kind of overtuning that plagued Mewtwo Y.
