The game was initially released in Japan on October 23, 1988, garnering instant acclaim. North American players had to wait until February 12, 1990, for its release, and European fans had the longest wait, finally experiencing the game on August 29, 1991.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is often considered one of the finest 2D Mario games and is cherished by many fans. It introduced memorable power-ups like the Super Leaf and Tanooki Suit, offering Mario new abilities and strategies. The game was groundbreaking in its non-linear level structure, which allowed players to explore via a map, providing diverse and engaging experiences. It also gained notable attention as it featured prominently in the finale of the 1989 Hollywood film, “The Wizard.”
With over 17 million copies sold worldwide, Super Mario Bros. 3 ranks as the third best-selling NES game of all time. It later became part of the Super Mario All-Stars collection for the SNES and was reimagined on the Game Boy Advance as “Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3.”
