Blizzard is gearing up for a significant shift with the development of a new IP, a survival game set in a distinct universe unlike any of its previous creations. While this novel venture promises excitement, the timing might be off, as Blizzard’s renowned franchises face uncertain fates. Diablo 4, Overwatch 2, and even the once-mighty World of Warcraft are each navigating challenging phases. The acclaimed World of Warcraft saw tumultuous periods with Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands, causing player disengagement despite the recent Dragonflight expansion’s efforts to rekindle interest.

Diablo 4, much anticipated for its return to the series’ darker roots, struggled post-launch due to gameplay monotony and contentious monetization. Overwatch 2, the sequel to the immensely popular hero shooter, faced criticism for deviating from its promised enhancements and axing the single-player campaign, leaving players disappointed. Even the illustrious StarCraft series has been dormant since the last expansion of StarCraft 2 and the 2017 StarCraft: Remastered release, with little to no new content.

With many iconic IPs in precarious positions, Blizzard’s move toward a new IP raises questions about prioritization. Perhaps pausing the pursuit of new projects and redirecting efforts to restore faith in their established franchises might be a more prudent strategy for the revered game studio.
