Blizzard is set to explore new horizons with a mysterious survival game, marking a departure from its established franchises. Little is known about this venture, but the anticipation is high. However, the timing seems peculiar, given the current struggles of Blizzard’s iconic IPs. Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 have faced criticism for falling short of expectations, World of Warcraft is working on regaining player trust, and StarCraft has remained dormant for years. While introducing a new IP can attract fresh players, addressing the issues within existing franchises might be a wiser move.

As a stalwart in PC gaming, Blizzard has crafted legendary franchises such as World of Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo. Despite their enduring presence, recent years have witnessed a decline in their standing. World of Warcraft faced challenges with controversial expansions, Diablo 4 failed to sustain interest, and Overwatch 2’s reception was mixed. StarCraft, once a prominent RTS series, has seen no new content since 2017. Amidst these challenges, introducing a new IP may divert resources from resolving the issues afflicting Blizzard’s renowned titles. A strategic pause to rejuvenate these iconic series could better position the studio for success in the long run.
