Recent patent hints at Microsoft’s interest in deta chable controllers, potentially for a versatile gaming experience.
Microsoft appears to be explore the development of a pair of deta chable gaming controllers, resembling the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons, according to recently uncovered patent documentation. While the physical appearance draws parallels with Nintendo’s Joy-Cons, the underlying technology suggests that Microsoft might be considering a response to the popular PlayStation Portal hand held console.
Despite Sony and Nintendo having a history of portable gaming consoles, Microsoft has not ventured into the realm of traditional hand held gaming in over two decades of producing Xbox hardware. However, the company recent focus on cloud gaming has resulted in innovative solutions, turning various smart phones and tablets into portable gaming devices.
The newly sur faced patent, geted in late December, reveals Microsoft’s exploration of “adaptable input devices,” show casing a concept of detachable controllers that could attach to a variety of devices. Notably, Microsoft’s design features a self adjusting gripping mechanism that accommodates devices with varying thicknesses.
Microsoft’s Concept for Joy-Con-Like Controllers
In the patent applications, the two detachable controllers are shown combined with a tablet, resembling a configuration similar to the PlayStation Portal. Additionally, the controllers can attach to smart phones in either portrait or landscape orientation. One of the illustrations even depicts the controllers connected to a foldable phone, reminiscent of devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series.
The patent does not delve into the specific wire less technology for sending input signals, but Bluetooth is a likely choice for such a solution. While the design patent does not guarantee the commercialization of the concept, it aligns with Microsoft’s ongoing exploration of detachable gamepads, a journey that dates back to at least 2019.
Microsoft’s Robust Research and Development
In 2022 alone, Microsoft’s research and development arm filed for over 1,800 patents, averaging more than 1,500 filings annually. Despite the substantial number of patents, many may not materialize into consumer ready products. Therefore, the likelihood of the recently uncovered concept becoming a commercial product in the near future remains uncertain.
As Microsoft continues to innovate and explore new gaming technologies, the concept of detachable controllers could play a role in shaping the future of portable gaming experiences, offering an alternative to existing hand held consoles.
