Sony faces challenges in restocking the highly successful PlayStation Portal, with estimated delivery times stretching into spring 2024.

Sony is encountering hurdles in replenishing stocks of the PlayStation Portal in the United States, as the latest orders for the device suggest delivery times extending into spring 2024. The company struggles to restock the handheld console have persisted, evident shortly after the device’s highly acclaimed release.
Anticipation for the PlayStation Portal’s strong commercial debut was evident even before its November 15 launch. Pre-orders for the hand held were quickly depleted worldwide upon their late September release, signaling high demand. However, various retailers, including the official PlayStation Store on Amazon, have grappled with maintaining adequate stock levels, especially in the U.S.
On December 29, the PlayStation Portal briefly reappeared on the official PlayStation Store on Amazon but swiftly sold out again, hinting at ongoing inventory challenges. Reports from purchasers indicated extended delivery times, estimating arrivals as late as mid March 2024, a sign of Sony’s continued restocking struggles.
Despite limited availability on Amazon, some users seized the opportunity to secure orders, in contrast to other retailers. Where the console has been consistently listed as “sold out” since early December.
PlayStation Portal Supply Continues Unstable Trend, Unlikely to Stabilize Before Spring 2024
Aside from inventory constraints, the PlayStation Portal faced issues post-launch, with incidents like customers receiving duplicate orders. Exploiting shortages, scalpers are selling the device for double its retail price on platforms like Amazon and eBay, reaching $400.
Sony’s current estimates suggest that the Play-Station Portal’s supply chain in the U.S. won’t normalize until spring 2024. Despite concerns about its inability to function as a standalone console, the handheld’s initial commercial success remains strong. However, the total number of units produced by Sony in 2023 remains undisclosed, leaving aspects of its early triumphs in need of further context.
