Rising Friendly Fire Incidents in a Cooperative Setting

Deep Rock Galactic, celebrated for its heartwarming dwarf-themed cooperative gameplay, faces an amusing yet troubling issue: a rise in friendly fire incidents, despite its community’s otherwise wholesome reputation.

In the game, players team up as rugged dwarves to brave the rigors of space mining. However, Ghost Ship Games’ annual review of 2023 statistics for Deep Rock Galactic reveals an intriguing trend. While players engage in activities like ordering rounds of beer, a significant statistic stands out: the causes of in-game deaths.

The Unusual Statistics of In-Game Deaths

Topping the list is fall damage, responsible for nearly 49 million deaths. The glyphid grunt, a frequent adversary, follows with about 24 million player deaths. However, the third most common cause of death, surprisingly, is friendly fire, with over 20 million incidents. This figure surpasses deaths by other enemy types and has notably increased by 2.59% from 2022.

The developers note that while other causes of death have declined, friendly fire is the exception, raising concerns and perhaps a few eyebrows. The 155 million beers consumed in-game might have a role in this increase. While team kills are sometimes inevitable in chaotic co-op games, their high frequency in Deep Rock Galactic is both a source of humor and a call for more cautious gameplay among its dwarven miners.
