PlayStation users are raising concerns about what they perceive as misleading pre-order notifications for the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. According to numerous reports, the official PlayStation Store is indicating to friends that some players have pre-ordered the next installment of the popular shooter, even though they claim they have not.
This controversy comes at a time when Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is generating significant buzz ahead of its 2024 release, particularly with the introduction of a new omnidirectional movement system. Activision recently confirmed that players who pre-order the game will gain early access to a beta weekend starting August 30. However, as this date approaches, more and more users are disputing the accuracy of the PlayStation Store’s pre-order notifications.
On Reddit, user “earic23” shared their frustration, explaining that although the PlayStation Store indicates to their friends that they have pre-ordered Black Ops 6, they haven’t actually done so. In fact, they revealed they haven’t played a Call of Duty game in several years. This post quickly garnered attention, with other users echoing similar experiences—some claiming the store falsely shows that their friends have pre-ordered the game, even though they have not.
The issue seems to stem from an information box in the PlayStation Store that reveals whether any of a user’s friends have pre-ordered a particular game. Several users have reported that this box is inaccurately displaying pre-order information for Black Ops 6. Another Reddit user, “josh_cow_man,” noted that the PlayStation Store claims 109 of their friends have pre-ordered the game, which they find highly unlikely.
The root cause of this apparent glitch remains unclear, but some users speculate that it could be linked to the Call of Duty HQ app. In recent years, Activision has bundled new Call of Duty titles under one app, which also includes the franchise’s free-to-play battle royale game, Call of Duty: Warzone. This integration could be causing the PlayStation Store to mistakenly assume that players have pre-ordered Black Ops 6 due to their previous interactions with the app.
Despite this pre-order confusion, Call of Duty remains one of the most successful video game franchises in history. However, many players are likely to hold off on pre-ordering Black Ops 6 until they can try out the open beta. Those who have already pre-ordered will gain early access to the beta from August 30 to September 4, while others will have to wait until September 6 to join in.
As the release date for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 draws closer, it remains to be seen whether Activision will address these concerns or if players will continue to encounter misleading pre-order notifications.
