The government of Meghalaya has become the first Indian state to officially sponsor an esports team, Jubilant Divine Esports. This marks a significant milestone for the state’s involvement in the esports industry. Telangana is also expected to introduce comprehensive esports policies soon.

Wanshankupar Suchiang, CEO of Jubilant Divine Esports, expressed his pride in the Meghalaya government’s belief in their vision. The team aims to promote esports in the state and prepare for future medal events in the Olympics, with ambitions to compete in global esports tournaments. Currently, Jubilant Divine Esports has a roster for Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) but plans to expand into other game titles such as Valorant, Counter-Strike 2, and Dota.

Suchiang emphasized that government sponsorship is a positive step for India’s gaming ecosystem, believing that India has great potential in esports. Jubilant Divine Esports announced the support of Shri Kyrmen Shylla, Minister of Excise, and Meghalaya Sports Minister Shri Shakliar Warjri, on their social media. The ministers emphasized that this partnership is only the beginning, as they work towards transforming Meghalaya into an esports hub.

Meghalaya’s vision includes building esports infrastructure, hosting tournaments, and offering support to players to bring them onto the global stage. The team will participate in Krafton’s Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series (BMPS) 2024, featuring 128 teams competing for a prize pool of Rs 2 Crore, with finals scheduled for September in Kochi, Kerala.
