Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine announced on Monday that Yūsei Matsui’s manga, The Elusive Samurai (Nigejōzu no Wakagimi), will receive a second season for its television anime adaptation. The first season premiered on July 6, airing on Tokyo MX, BS11, Tochigi TV, and Gunma TV. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired and is also providing an English dub.
Directed by Yuta Yamazaki, who previously worked as an assistant director on Wonder Egg Priority, the first season was produced by CloverWorks. Character designs were created by Yasushi Nishiya, known for his work on Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us. The opening theme, “Plan A,” was performed by DISH//, while Botchi Boromaru sang the ending theme, “Kamakura STYLE.”
In addition to the anime, Viz Media and MANGA Plus are releasing new chapters of the manga in English as they are published in Japan, with Viz also providing print editions. The story follows Tokiyuki, whose family is massacred by the traitor Ashikaga Takauji. With the help of loyal retainers, including the clairvoyant Suwa Yorishige, Tokiyuki escapes and hopes to reclaim his place as Japan’s ruler. Matsui, also known for Majin Tantei Nōgami Neuro and Assassination Classroom, launched the manga in January 2021, and it continues to be serialized. The 17th volume was published on September 4.
