While Death Note might not be the first title that comes to mind for anime video games, an adaptation is reportedly in development for PlayStation. The iconic story of Light Yagami and his deadly notebook has seen various adaptations, but options for interactive experiences have been limited. Apart from a few games released on the Nintendo DS and mobile platforms, fans of the franchise have had few opportunities to engage with Death Note in a video game format.
What We Know About Death Note: Killer Within

However, this is set to change. According to Gematsu, a new listing on the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee’s website indicates that a game titled Death Note: Killer Within is on its way to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Very little information is available about the game, but it’s noteworthy that publisher Shueisha filed a trademark for the title on June 12. Ratings board leaks are generally reliable regarding unannounced projects, though it’s still unclear when a release may occur. If the game has been rated, it could be nearing launch or an announcement might be forthcoming.
Potential Gameplay Mechanics
As for gameplay, the challenge lies in effectively adapting the psychological thriller nature of Death Note. Unlike many anime adaptations that take the form of arena fighters—such as Dragon Ball: Sparking! or My Hero One’s Justice 2—a combat-focused approach would likely fail to capture the essence of Death Note. A better fit might be a visual novel format, similar to the Ace Attorney series, where players investigate crimes and solve logic puzzles.
Engaging Players in a Gripping Narrative
This format could allow players to step into the shoes of characters like L or a new detective, engaging in a gripping game of cat-and-mouse with Light Yagami. Enthusiasts who have long awaited a faithful video game adaptation may soon have their wish fulfilled.
