Last year, it was announced that the 1979 Toei Animation classic Hana no Ko Lunlun would receive a new adaptation titled Hua Xianzi: Zhi Mofa Xiang Duilun (translated as Flower Fairy: Theory of Magical Fragrance). This Chinese-produced animation is being presented as a sequel to the original series, and an “advance trailer” for the project has recently been released.
In Hua Xianzi, the story follows Rumi, an apprentice at a perfume-making studio, who is suddenly attacked by a mysterious black mist. With the help of a black cat, she discovers the power of a flower key, transforming into a Flower Child (Hana no Ko). As a Flower Child, Rumi embarks on a quest to purify the scattered petals of a seven-colored flower that has withered due to dark magic. Throughout her journey as a magical girl, Rumi must confront a darker challenge: a mysterious second Flower Child who also threatens her mission.
The animation production is handled by Wawayu Animation Studio, while the planning is a collaboration between Toei Animation’s Shanghai-based subsidiary, Toei Dongman, and Tencent Video. The original Hana no Ko Lunlun is part of Toei Animation’s Majokko lineup, which began with Mahou Tsukai Sally in 1966. This new adaptation aims to introduce the beloved franchise to a new generation of viewers.
