Introduction: Starfield, the expansive space exploration game, offers players a diverse array of alien planets and biomes to explore. While many are familiar with the likes of deserts, forests, and mountains, there’s a lesser-known terrain type that often eludes players’ attention: Coast Biomes. In this guide, we delve into the mysterious world of Coast Biomes in Starfield, shedding light on their existence, characteristics, and why they sometimes frustrate players.
Uncovering Coast Biomes:

Coast Biomes, although not prominently explained in the game, are an integral part of Starfield’s environmental diversity. These coastal regions present a unique twist on familiar biomes like mountains, forests, and deserts. Yet, locating a (Coast) landing area can be somewhat tricky. Strangely, landing areas that appear nearly submerged in the ocean may not register as a Coast, while those further inland might.
While Coast Biomes don’t usually harbor exclusive fauna, flora, or resources, players often find themselves venturing to the coast for skill challenges that require scanning a particular plant or fish species found only in these regions.
The Frustration Factor:

Coast Biomes can be a source of frustration for many players, primarily due to two key reasons. Firstly, when players complete all scanning tasks for a specific biome, the game typically displays a “Biome Completed” message, indicating that they’ve exhausted all scan subjects in that biome. However, this message doesn’t appear if the last scan subject is located in the Coast region. This omission can lead players to spend excessive time searching for that elusive last scan subject when a visit to the coastline could resolve their quest.
Secondly, Coast Biomes often hide the final scan subject in the form of a specific fish species. Scanning enough of these creatures to reach 100 percent can be a tedious endeavor. Swimming in Starfield, unfortunately, lacks polish and is cumbersome. Players swim slowly, cannot dive beneath the surface, and must use the Boost Pack for combat or scanning underwater lifeforms.
When to Explore the Coast:

To determine when players should consider exploring Coast Biomes, it’s crucial to avoid unnecessary frustration. If a biome’s fauna tasks remain incomplete despite thorough exploration, don’t assume the last creature is in a Coast Biome. The “Biome Completed” message does not relate to Coast maps.
Additionally, certain biomes may have a lower spawn rate for specific creatures compared to others. If you can’t locate the last fauna creature in a particular biome, try fast-traveling to another biome with less completion, as the creature may be easier to find there.
However, if you’ve explored multiple biomes and the elusive creature remains elusive, it’s time to search the coastlines of all biomes on the planet.
