Bungie is set to introduce the Checkmate modifier to Destiny 2, aiming to inject new excitement into existing PvP modes. Starting on September 19, 2023, after the weekly reset, Checkmate will alter the Crucible experience significantly. This modifier will shift the focus towards gunplay, reducing the impact of abilities and promoting more aggressive gameplay.

The first mode to undergo modification will be Control, followed by Survival two weeks later, and finally Rumble to conclude the six-week testing cycle. With Checkmate active, players will have increased health, resulting in a higher time-to-kill (TTK). Some weapons’ stats will also be adjusted to accommodate this change.

Additionally, basic abilities will charge 50% slower, while Supers will regenerate 40% slower. Players can only boost these rates with Exotics and specific builds. Special ammo won’t be provided upon respawn, nor will it drop from other players. However, players can generate green ammo bricks by earning points through kills, assists, deaths, zone captures, and collecting Heavy ammo.

This shift represents a notable departure from traditional Destiny 2 PvP, offering a mix of excitement and uncertainty. The best way to gauge its appeal is to experience it firsthand when Checkmate arrives on September 19, 2023.
