Discover the Magic Mirror’s limited customization options in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 introduced the Magic Mirror in Patch 3, aiming to address the player base’s concerns about limited customization options once the campaign begins. This innovative item allows you to alter your character’s appearance, but it comes with certain restrictions. If you’re curious about how to find and make use of the Magic Mirror in Baldur’s Gate 3, read on to learn more.
How to Obtain the Magic Mirror
Obtaining the Magic Mirror is a straightforward process. Simply head to your campsite. Keep in mind that the mirror’s location within your campsite may vary depending on which area of the map you are in. For instance, in Act One, you’ll find the Magic Mirror inside a building, while in Acts Two and Three, it can be located on walls and other structures.
Using the Magic Mirror in Baldur’s Gate 3
While the Magic Mirror in Baldur’s Gate 3 offers some customization options, it does not provide complete freedom to change every aspect of your character’s appearance. Here’s what you can customize using the Magic Mirror:
- Identity
- Voice
- Face
- Body Art
- Eye Color
- Makeup
- Hair Style and Color
There’s also a randomize option if you’re feeling adventurous and want to explore unique combinations. However, there are certain elements of your character’s appearance that you cannot change using the Magic Mirror, such as your race/subrace and body type.

Characters that are restricted from changing their appearance include:
- Shadowheart
- Gale
- Astarion
- Wyll
- Lae’zel
- Karlach
- Minthara
- Halsin
- Minsc and Boo
- Jaheira

Although Halsin, Minsc, and Jaheira are not considered Origin characters, they are companions with established backstories, making them off-limits for appearance customization. The recent Patch 3 update clarified that Origin characters cannot modify their appearance. The Dark Urge, while an Origin character, can still be customized, providing flexibility for players pursuing evil or redemption playthroughs.
It’s important to note that the Magic Mirror is solely intended for changing your character’s appearance. If you wish to respec your character or change classes, you should consult Withers, a lich-like character in your camp. If you missed the opportunity to encounter him early in Act One, don’t worry, as he will eventually appear at your camp and serve as your go-to NPC for class changes.
