CD Projekt Red is considering the inclusion of a significant feature in the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 – the addition of a third-person option, which was notably absent in the original game. The decision to make Cyberpunk 2077 a first-person experience was initially made to distinguish it from CD Projekt Red’s renowned The Witcher series. However, this decision may not apply to the sequel, as the possibility of incorporating a third-person camera perspective is not ruled out.

Interestingly, Cyberpunk 2077 was originally planned as a third-person game before its development shifted to first-person. The game’s development journey was filled with changes, culminating in its tumultuous launch. In 2016, the decision was made to transition from third-person to first-person, leading to the abandonment of features like wall-running and flying cars. It’s fascinating to contemplate what Cyberpunk 2077 could have been if it had maintained its original third-person concept.
During a presentation for CD Projekt Red’s Investor Day, Cyberpunk 2077 quest director Paweł Sasko was asked about the possibility of reintroducing third-person gameplay in the sequel. Sasko didn’t provide a direct response but kept the door open by stating that it’s yet to be determined whether the sequel will follow a first-person perspective or not.
Additionally, Sasko discussed the rationale behind the decision to make the original Cyberpunk 2077 a first-person game. He emphasized that the first-person perspective was essential to Cyberpunk 2077’s identity, setting it apart from The Witcher and making it a unique experience. Sasko also mentioned that first-person perspective aided in marketing the game, as platforms like YouTube, Twitch, and screenshots played a significant role in generating interest and sales.
While there are no immediate plans for a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, CD Projekt Red is currently working on a new game set in The Witcher universe, which is expected to release no earlier than 2025. The development of a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is in the pipeline, and it will be undertaken at CD Projekt’s upcoming North American location.
The debate over whether Cyberpunk 2077 would have been better in third-person or if it makes sense for the sequel to offer a third-person perspective remains complex. While third-person has been successful in The Witcher franchise, the first-person perspective delivered a modern and exceptional gaming experience in Cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available on various platforms, including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
