Inkle’s Scripting Language, Ink, Gains Unreal Engine Integration Courtesy of The Chinese Room – Bloodlines 2

A Unified Path for Interactive Storytelling in Unreal Engine

Inkle, renowned for crafting interactive storygames such as “80 Days,” “Heaven’s Vault,” “Overboard!,” and the “Steve Jackson’s Sorcery!” series, is well-known for its innovative scripting language, Ink. This unique language employs markup instead of traditional scripting, enabling developers to create compelling narratives. Ink has previously been integrated seamlessly with Unity, but the desire for flexibility has led to its expansion into Unreal Engine territory.

The integration of Ink into Unreal Engine is made possible by the expertise of Nick Slaven, Technical Director at The Chinese Room. This game development studio is famous for its foundational walking simulator, “Dear Esther,” and is currently working on the highly anticipated RPG sequel “Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2” and the nautical horror game “Still Wakes the Deep.”

The Unreal Engine plugin for Ink is aptly named “Inkpot” and is available as an open-source project. Interested developers can access and download Inkpot from The Chinese Room’s Github page. This versatile tool is compatible with Unreal Engine versions from 5.3 onwards and supports Ink version 20.

Inkle’s Ink scripting language has significantly simplified the process of crafting game dialogue and narrative text, making it more accessible to non-coders. Its seamless integration with Unity has been employed in the development of notable titles such as “Neocab,” “Haven,” “Sable,” “Wayward Strand,” “Falcon Age,” “Where the Water Tastes Like Wine,” “Goodbye Volcano High,” “Dance of Death: Du Lac & Fey,” “Signs of the Sojourner,” and a previous title from the “Vampire: The Masquerade” series, “Coteries of New York.”
