Despite Red Dead Redemption 2’s initial success, the demand for a current-gen port of the game has dwindled over time. Fans have long wished for an updated version to take advantage of the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. However, the opportunity for a current-gen port has seemingly passed, as Rockstar has not made any concrete developments in that direction.

While the ideal time for a Red Dead Redemption 2 current-gen release would have been around the launch of the new consoles in 2020, Rockstar did not seize the opportunity. Although there were leaks suggesting that such ports were in development in May 2022, it was later reported that the work was scrapped, likely due to the company needing resources for Grand Theft Auto 6.
Furthermore, the demand for these ports has diminished over time, with many players having already experienced Red Dead Redemption 2 on modern hardware. Additionally, the recent disappointment surrounding the Nintendo Switch release of the original Red Dead Redemption has left a sour taste in the mouths of fans.

Given the time that has passed and the evolving gaming landscape, Rockstar might be better off waiting until Grand Theft Auto 6 settles before revisiting the idea of a Red Dead Redemption 2 remaster for next-generation consoles. The appeal of such ports has waned, and it makes sense for Rockstar to focus on larger projects instead of trying to revive this aging title. While rumors persist, the prospects for these ports appear lackluster for a significant portion of the Red Dead Redemption 2 community.
