Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 draws inspiration from the underrated gem ‘Spider-Man: Web of Shadows,’ leaving a distinct mark on the game’s narrative and aesthetics.

Since his debut in 1962, Spider-Man has remained the world’s beloved superhero, a timeless icon seen in movies, animated features, TV shows, and video games. With a rich history of adaptations, Spider-Man continues to captivate audiences of all ages. Among the various Spider-Man video games, Insomniac’s approach has notably struck the right chord, with ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ emerging as a resounding success for the developer.
‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ might not be flawless, but it unquestionably stands as a remarkable game, earning the title of the best Spider-Man game by popular acclaim. While it excels in combat, web-swinging mechanics, and character dynamics, it incorporates ideas and elements reminiscent of past Spider-Man video games, most notably paying tribute to a specific title in its final moments.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Homage to ‘Web of Shadows’:

Released in 2008, ‘Spider-Man: Web of Shadows’ has the distinction of being one of the most polarizing Spider-Man games. Critics and fans were split on the game, with some criticizing aspects like its corny dialogue, rushed storyline, combat and web-swinging mechanics, and a peculiar portrayal of Peter Parker’s voice. On the flip side, many praised its fast-paced gameplay, parkour combat, fluid traversal mechanics, and inclusion of lesser-known Marvel heroes such as Moon Knight and Luke Cage.
Out of all the Spider-Man games that ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ could draw inspiration from, ‘Web of Shadows’ might seem an unusual choice. Nevertheless, this 2008 title has its merits, and certain intriguing ideas from it seem to have been integrated to great effect in Insomniac’s highly anticipated sequel. The Symbiote suit plays a pivotal role in both games, and while their narratives encompass the usual Symbiote story beats, ‘Spider-Man 2’ features moments that harken back to the more campy sequences in ‘Web of Shadows.’
However, the most pronounced influence from ‘Spider-Man: Web of Shadows’ becomes apparent in ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s’ final act. As Venom fully emerges and is unveiled to the world, he embarks on a mission to “heal the world,” which translates to infecting all of New York City with the Symbiote. In a matter of days, New York transforms from its familiar urban self into a nightmarish, apocalyptic scenario. Symbiote tendrils extend between skyscrapers, and the streets are submerged in oozing black goo.
This Symbiote-infested New York City bears a striking resemblance to the nightmarish Symbiote-infested version of the city in the final act of ‘Web of Shadows.’ Venom’s plot in ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ also mirrors that of ‘Web of Shadows,’ as both versions of the villain turn ordinary citizens into Symbiote monsters, striving to conquer the city, and ultimately the world.
‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ is available exclusively on the PS5, continuing the legacy of this iconic superhero in the realm of video games.
