As Overwatch 2’s Season 7 Kicks Off, the Player Base Faces the Onslaught of Bot-Operated Accounts in Competitive Matches

Amidst the positive buzz generated by the Overwatch 2 Invasion Update, the game grapples with a growing issue that threatens its competitive integrity: bot accounts infiltrating ranked lobbies. This intrusion has prompted players to question the long-term health of Overwatch 2, tarnishing their gaming experience.
Reports of bots flooding competitive Overwatch 2 matches have surfaced since January 2023. Instances of entire enemy teams remaining idle in spawn zones until the threat of inactivity penalties forces them to move have sparked concerns among the community. Moreover, players have encountered bot teammates and opponents repeatedly across multiple games, further contributing to the disarray.
A prevailing theory links these bots to the smurf account market, where newer accounts with AI-driven bot hours accumulate enough hours to be placed in Bronze tier. High-ranking players can then acquire these accounts, exploiting lower-ranked lobbies. These practices disrupt fair competition and detract from the gaming experience, causing distress for the affected players.
Blizzard, the developer of Overwatch 2, has not released an official response to the bot issue, leaving players in the dark about potential countermeasures. However, the company has taken steps to combat cheating, with a substantial ban wave eliminating thousands of Overwatch 2 cheaters upon the game’s release.
As the situation unfolds, Overwatch 2 players remain uncertain about the game’s competitive future, hoping that Blizzard will address this pressing concern.
