Changes in Steam’s Pricing Strategies to Achieve Fairness for Gamers and Simplify Developer Operations in Various Countries.

Valve, the company behind Steam, is set to revamp its pricing structure in Argentina and Turkey and introduce regionalized pricing in 25 countries, commencing from November 20, 2023. While Steam users in various regions have experienced localized pricing in their respective currencies, the exchange rate fluctuations have often led to price disparities, causing frustration among some consumers.
These price discrepancies are typically influenced by currency exchange rates, regional taxes, and additional fees. Steam users have sometimes taken advantage of these variations by altering their region settings to access more favorable prices for games.
To address the issues arising from “exchange rate volatility” in Argentina and Turkey, Valve has decided to switch from pricing in Argentine pesos and Turkish liras to listing prices in US dollars. This transition aims to establish pricing stability, simplifying the process for both developers and gamers while facilitating more consistent payment methods. However, it contrasts with the desire of some gamers who have advocated for Steam to accept a broader range of currencies.

Starting November 20, 2023, Steam users with balances in Argentine pesos or Turkish liras will see their funds converted to US dollars at the prevailing exchange rate. Steam subscriptions in these currencies will be canceled, requiring users to resubscribe in US dollars.
Moreover, the adjustments in pricing models for Argentina and Turkey will place them among the 25 countries adopting Valve’s “regionalized USD pricing.” Game purchases in these regions will default to US dollars.
While gamers may typically focus on the base cost of a video game, companies need to consider multiple factors when determining pricing, including regional currencies and competitive pricing strategies. The recent pricing parity requirement, where game prices on Steam cannot be lower than on other storefronts, exemplifies the complexities involved in this process.
