According to recent statements from a senior CD Projekt Red official, the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is set to mirror the evolutionary trajectory of The Witcher series. This announcement comes more than a year after the studio’s confirmation of a new Cyberpunk 2077 game, known internally as Orion.

After the successful release of Phantom Liberty, CD Projekt Red has refocused its efforts on long-term projects, including the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel and the next installment in The Witcher franchise. Although concrete details about these projects remain under wraps, insights from CDPR officials have provided some glimpses into the development process. Colin Walder, CDPR’s Management and Audio Engineering Director, recently highlighted the distinct differences between the development of The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2077.
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, CDPR Narrative Director Igor Sarzynski shared the studio’s vision for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, emphasizing its aim to emulate the transformative journey witnessed in The Witcher series. Drawing comparisons to the evolution from The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Sarzynski underlined the substantial progression achieved between each game. CD Projekt Red intends to apply a similar evolution to the upcoming Cyberpunk sequel, building on the foundations set by its predecessor.
While striving to deliver an enhanced gaming experience, the next iteration of Cyberpunk 2077 is expected to retain successful elements from the original game. Notably, the art, city design, music, interactive scene system, and playstyles are anticipated to remain largely unchanged. The developer aims to refine these existing gameplay elements to create a more immersive and coherent experience in the sequel.
Despite the ambitious goals, CD Projekt Red revealed during an October investor presentation that the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is still in the conceptual design phase, indicating that its release is several years away.
