The situation surrounding Edowin in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a tense one, and the consequences can be dire if players do not approach it carefully. Unfortunately, key information is not readily apparent to the characters involved, and innocent mistakes can result in the deaths of numerous NPCs in the vicinity.
Handling Edowin in Baldur’s Gate 3 involves making choices that affect not only Edowin but also his friends’ fate. These friends are in danger from both the menacing owlbear and the Mind Flayer parasite residing within Edowin. Players must navigate the dialogue choices and skill checks cautiously to minimize the damage and ensure the safety of the characters.
Updated on November 8th, 2023: Dealing with Edowin in Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the early pivotal decisions that players encounter. Edowin and his group are found close to the beginning of the game during the first act, typically through exploration. However, players may inadvertently worsen his situation if they choose the wrong dialogue options or fail specific skill checks. This guide has been updated to offer players a clearer understanding of how to help Edowin in Baldur’s Gate 3.
This article contains in-game consequences and reveals information that the player’s character may not initially know. Those committed to role-playing may prefer to discover these details on their own.
Helping Edowin’s Friends:

- Choose the dialogue option, “Forget the owlbear. You’re still alive – so go,” when prompted.
Unfortunately, players cannot save Edowin at this stage, and he will succumb to his injuries even with a perfect Medicine check. However, it is possible to assist Edowin’s friends. Initially, Brynna and Andrick are in peril from both the owlbear and the Mind Flayer parasite residing within Edowin. If players inadvertently reveal that they came from the crashed ship, Brynna and Andrick may lose their lives in a confrontation with the player.
Brynna and Andrick mistakenly view Edowin as a cult leader and might risk their lives if they believe the player is betraying Edowin’s mission to rescue survivors. By advising them to flee and giving them an opportunity to reassess their actions, players can help them break free from the Mind Flayer’s control. At this stage, players have already dealt with the Mind Flayer that infected them, providing insights into the extent of its influence.
Avenging Edowin:

- Loot Edowin’s body.
- Choose the dialogue option, “Reach out and crush it,” twice when prompted.
- Opt for either Insight or Strength to attempt to crush the parasite.
- Choose either Insight, Constitution, or Strength for the second attempt to crush the parasite.
The small parasitic creature will find a new host and continue indoctrinating others unless it is crushed. Successfully crushing it requires passing two consecutive checks, either by choosing a character with high Insight or Strength to handle the task. Edowin may still have succumbed to his injuries from the owlbear, but players who save his friends and eliminate the parasite preserve the legacy of what he cherished.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available in Early Access on PC, with the PlayStation 5 version releasing on September 6th, 2023. An Xbox Series X/S version is also in development.
