An analysis of the game’s source code suggests Grand Theft Auto 5 might not hit Nintendo’s Switch, dashing expectations for hopeful gamers.

An analysis of Grand Theft Auto 5’s source code suggests that actively pursuing a Nintendo Switch adaptation was unlikely. The leaked GTA 5 source code, unveiled alongside various Rockstar files, has cast shadows over any anticipation for the game’s availability on Nintendo’s thriving platform.
Since before the Nintendo Switch’s introduction in early 2017,
Speculations surrounding a possible GTA 5 port for the console have persisted. Rockstar’s prior successful adaptations like L.A. Noire and Red Dead Redemption for the Switch raised expectations among fans, fostering optimism for GTA 5’s eventual arrival on the hybrid console.
However, a thorough examination of GTA 5’s source code by Reddit user RafaelSwi unveiled minimal references to the Nintendo Switch, suggesting a lack of active development. We found only two mentions of the console, alongside a few references to its earlier NX64 codename, within utility functions. Crucially, these references failed to suggest any substantial progress towards making GTA 5 compatible with the Switch’s ARM-based Nvidia Tegra X1 architecture.
RafaelSwi’s analysis proposed that any plans for a Switch port might have been abandoned even before the console’s 2017 release. This speculation emerged from the source code containing more references to the Switch’s prior NX codename than its official title, potentially linked to the console’s architecture shift.
The sole RAGE engine game brought to the Nintendo Switch was Red Dead Redemption, arriving in August 2023. RafaelSwi emphasized that attempting to run GTA 5 on the Switch before adapting the engine for the console would have been unproductive. Consequently, there’s scant evidence suggesting active development efforts for GTA 5 on the hybrid console.
While the potential for GTA 5 on future Nintendo hardware, rumored with the Switch successor in 2024, remains uncertain, history implies GTA 6 might follow the same path as its predecessor. The obstacles that hindered GTA 5’s Switch release might well affect the likelihood of GTA 6 landing on the anticipated Switch 2.
