The anime film Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising has released a second teaser trailer titled “SIDE Homura.” This new preview features a haunting scene of Homura Akemi, one of the central characters, lying fallen. The teaser further reveals a mysterious, shadowy lizard-like creature diving toward her, causing a pair of unusual wings to emerge from her back, hinting at intense transformations or inner struggles in the storyline.
The Walpurgisnacht Rising film is scheduled for a winter 2025 release, following a delay from its initial winter 2024 window. Initially announced in April 2021, the movie will continue the storyline from the beloved 2011 anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the 2013 sequel film Rebellion, exploring the fates and trials of the magical girls as they confront dark forces and existential dilemmas.
The original TV series follows Madoka Kaname, an eighth grader who, after a chance encounter, faces life-altering choices that could reshape her destiny. As described by Crunchyroll, it begins as a typical schoolgirl’s life before transforming into a dark, magical adventure. The series has since expanded, including the now-ended spin-off game and anime Magia Record, which aired its final season in April 2022. A new game, Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra, is also set for release this year.
The returning creative team includes Akiyuki Shinbo as chief director, with Yukihiro Miyamoto directing, Gen Urobuchi as screenwriter, Junichirou Taniguchi as character designer, and Yuki Kajiura composing music. Studio Shaft will animate the film. The cast features Aoi Yuki as Madoka, Chiwa Saito as Homura, and other key voice actors reprising their roles.
