Blizzard Entertainment has reportedly carried out layoffs in its Hearthstone development team, with several employees facing redundancy due to ongoing company restructuring. The news of these staff cuts was first surfaced on LinkedIn and later confirmed by Activision Blizzard. Approximately ten employees, some of whom had long tenures with the company, have been affected by these layoffs.

One affected employee, Hunter C., a Software Engineer with 18 and a half years at Blizzard Entertainment, revealed the layoff on LinkedIn, stating that his role as a Tools Engineer was no longer needed as part of the Hearthstone team’s restructuring.

Activision Blizzard acknowledged the layoffs and cited organizational changes within the Hearthstone team as the reason behind the redundancies. A company spokesperson expressed gratitude for the contributions of the affected employees.
It remains unclear if these organizational changes will impact other teams within Activision Blizzard. Additionally, the company is expected to be acquired by Microsoft in the near future, which may lead to further changes in the company’s structure.

These layoffs are part of a broader trend in the gaming industry in 2023, where various companies have initiated structural overhauls in response to rising inflation and business costs. Other major gaming companies, including Embracer Group, EA, CD Projekt Red, Riot Games, Amazon, and Ascendant Studios, have also undergone similar restructures, indicating a wave of change in the global gaming industry.
Our thoughts go out to those affected by these recent layoffs at Activision Blizzard and other companies in the industry.
