In Mortal Kombat’s 30th-anniversary year, the franchise takes an exciting leap with the introduction of the Kameo assist character mechanic in Mortal Kombat 1. This innovative feature allows players to select a second character to fight alongside their primary fighter, significantly expanding the range of creative strategies available during battles.

Kameos include iconic characters from the original Mortal Kombat roster, such as Sonya, Kano, and Goro, each sporting their 1990s attire. Additionally, Mortal Kombat 1 introduces some lesser-known characters from later in the series, like Stryker and Sareena. Players can even unlock alternate versions of certain characters like Sub-Zero and Kung Lao, creating intriguing team dynamics.

Using Kameos is straightforward – a simple press of the right shoulder button summons your chosen Kameo character to execute one of their signature attacks. However, the versatility of Kameos is where the real excitement lies.

Each Kameo character has multiple abilities depending on the direction you push on the controller when summoning them. These abilities range from basic attacks and projectiles to moves that inflict valuable status effects. For instance, calling in Cyrax can immobilize your opponent with a net, while Jax delivers a powerful ground pound to knock them off their feet.

Since every fighter in Mortal Kombat 1 has unique strengths and weaknesses, pairing your favorite character with a Kameo character can offset their limitations or provide utility they lack. This system opens up countless strategic possibilities, enabling players to adapt their fighting style to different situations.

For instance, if you prefer the grappling-focused Reiko but need a ranged attack, you can team up with a Kameo character who excels at long-range combat. Combining Scorpion with the Kameo version of Sub Zero gives you access to both fire and ice abilities, a valuable asset in Mortal Kombat 1’s Invasion mode, where elemental effects play a crucial role.

Kameos are deeply integrated into Mortal Kombat 1’s combat system, allowing advanced techniques and lengthy combos. The community has already begun exploring the possibilities of Kameos, demonstrating their versatility during the online beta.

Kameos act as an additional special ability in your character’s arsenal, allowing you to seamlessly incorporate them into attack strings, stacking additional damage onto your assaults. With 15 Kameo characters and numerous primary character-Kameo combinations, along with the varied abilities of the Kameo roster and the accessible combo-building system in Mortal Kombat 1, players can get creative and perform feats previously impossible in the series.

Characters like Li Mei may have limited combo potential, but pairing her with a Kameo like Motaro, who can land extra hits while Li Mei resets, extends her combo possibilities. Scorpion’s high kicks send opponents out of reach, but with Kung Lao as a Kameo holding them in place with a spinning attack, you can maximize damage output. Even simple Kameo usage, like applying pressure or disrupting an opponent’s strategy, can be highly effective.

Beyond utility, Kameo characters add a thrilling tag-team element to battles, featuring unique Fatal Blow techniques and Fatalities that add a fresh layer of excitement to Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat 1 is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, promising a dynamic and engaging combat experience with the groundbreaking Kameo system.
