Speedrunner Mae Sets World Record for Swift Intimacy in the Iconic RPG
Speedrunning Baldur’s Gate 3 has ventured into unexpected and cheeky territory with the introduction of the “sex%” category, where the goal is to initiate in-game romantic encounters as quickly as possible. Mae, a prominent figure in the Baldur’s Gate 3 speedrunning community, recently achieved a world record by accomplishing this feat in under two minutes.
While most speedruns focus on achieving 100% completion or any% runs, Baldur’s Gate 3’s penchant for romantic encounters led to the creation of a unique “sex%” category, which is officially tracked on speedrun.com.
Mae, renowned for their mastery of BG3 speedrunning, has previously secured records in the any% category with runs involving Gale and Shadowheart. Their latest accomplishment further solidifies their status as a top-tier BG3 speedrunner.
Mae’s record-breaking speedrun follows a similar pattern to their previous eight-minute run from August. Using Githyanki psionic buffs and enhanced strength, the character is capable of executing substantial jumps, allowing them to bypass combat encounters and challenging terrain.
During this historic speedrun, Mae chose an avatar named “EXTREME COITUS HAVER.” In the BG3 narrative, the character Lae’zel is known to be the easiest companion to pursue a romantic connection with. However, reaching this point in the game involves progressing to the Grove of Silvanus and demonstrating one’s worth to Lae’zel.
Previously, a significant time was spent dealing with a goblin battle near the gates, but speedrunners later identified an alternate path involving moon jumping, significantly reducing the time required.
The streamlined “sex%” speedrun comprises a few key steps: jumping through the Nautiloid, rescuing Lae’zel on the beach, entering the grove, advancing through quest cutscenes and romance dialogue, performing a long rest, and finally initiating the romantic encounter.
While this speedrunning achievement is remarkable in its own right, some may ponder whether such rapid romantic conquests align with the spirit of the game, questioning the depth and emotional connection that might be missing in these abbreviated encounters.
