Baldur’s Gate 3 has gained immense popularity in the RPG community this year, largely due to its extensive equipment options that contribute significantly to its appeal. In Act 1 of the game, players have access to potent weapons right from the start, with one even obtainable during the prologue. Commander Zhalk’s Everburn Blade is a noteworthy greatsword, boasting an additional 1d4 fire damage, and it can be acquired from him on the Nautiloid Ship. It’s versatile, suitable for any character capable of wielding a two-handed weapon, making it a powerful choice for early and later encounters in Baldur’s Gate 3.

However, for those willing to tread on a morally grey path, Act 1’s northern region, Waukeen’s Rest, holds an even more tempting reward.

Acquiring Commander Zhalk’s Everburn Blade involves taking down a hostile commander from the Nine Hells, a challenge that doesn’t impose any moral dilemmas. The prologue is straightforward, but once players enter the main game world, they can plunder items from its inhabitants at will. Svartlevee’s Woundseeker, on the other hand, is accessible only to those who embrace a more morally ambiguous playstyle, presenting a challenge for many players in this type of game.

BG3: Svartlebee’s Woundseeker is an underrated gem that often goes unnoticed. You can find this greatsword held by one of the Flaming Fist soldiers at the burning inn, Waukeen’s Rest, and you must seize it rather than earn it. For players with no qualms about morality, it’s a valuable piece of equipment due to its solid stats and unique effects:

  • Deals 2d6 + 1 (3-13) points of slashing damage per hit.
  • As a greatsword, Svartlebee’s Woundseeker also adds the player’s Strength modifier to its damage.
  • “Deepen the Wound” adds an extra 1d4 damage against all creatures that have already taken damage.
  • If the player has a source of fire, it can further enhance the blade with an additional 1d4 of fire damage for three turns, surpassing the effect of the Everburn Blade.

Svartlebee’s Woundseeker provides a significant advantage to players, even at the early stages of Baldur’s Gate 3. However, obtaining this powerful weapon requires making morally questionable choices.

The Moral Dilemma at Waukeen’s Rest:

Waukeen’s Rest is a location in dire need, with fire victims awaiting rescue. The Flaming Fist of Baldur’s Gate finds themselves in a precarious situation at the inn, and BG3’s companion, Wyll, has personal ties to those in need of help. Players following a morally ambiguous path may choose to eliminate the Flaming Fist members who are attempting to aid the fire victims and claim Svartlebee’s Woundseeker from Gauntlet Yeva. It’s a decision shrouded in shades of gray since the Flaming Fist is a morally ambiguous organization of mercenaries, not known for their virtuous actions.

Regardless of the reputation of the Flaming Fist, attacking individuals in need during a tragic event like the fire at Waukeen’s Rest raises ethical concerns. Svartlebee’s Woundseeker, with its enduring effectiveness throughout Act 1 and beyond, exemplifies the ethical conflicts within Baldur’s Gate 3, making even its side content compelling.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on PC, Mac, and PS5, with Xbox Series X/S versions also in development.
