Learn how to locate and restore the spirit of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, Thaniel, in Baldur’s Gate 3 to help break the region’s curse.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, players are faced with the challenge of locating and healing Thaniel, the spirit of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, in their quest to restore the region’s beauty. Once the Flaming Fist mercenary, Art Cullagh, is awakened, players can share their knowledge with the druid Halsin, who will request their assistance in recovering Thaniel. Thaniel’s predicament results from a curse cast by Ketheric Thorm, banishing him into the Shadowfell, but Halsin has a plan to rescue him.
This plan involves two crucial battles against waves of enemies, demanding the players’ party to be well-prepared for the ensuing onslaught. While the battles are challenging, players can successfully heal Thaniel and further progress in Baldur’s Gate 3. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what players should expect.
Updated on November 6th, 2023: Baldur’s Gate 3 Act II introduces a side quest involving the search for Thaniel, a missing child. Finding Thaniel can be perplexing for players, so this guide now includes an accompanying video for a more comprehensive and visual understanding.
How to Safeguard Halsin’s Portal:

The initial battle unfolds just north of the protective barrier surrounding the Last Light Inn. Halsin initiates a portal to the Shadowfell to retrieve Thaniel, provoking nearby shadows and undead into a relentless attack. Players are tasked with guarding the portal to prevent enemies from destroying it. If the portal remains intact after four rounds, players secure victory.
The battle consists of multiple waves of enemies, starting with shadows, wraiths, fallen Harpers, and pilgrims. Subsequently, grasping vines and ravens with minimal hit points emerge near the barrier. Githyanki warriors and additional Harpers charge in from the north in two more waves.
Effective use of area-of-effect spells, like Fireball and Lightning Bolt, is essential. Given the enemies’ tendency to cluster, these spells are highly effective. Spells hindering enemy mobility, such as Ice Storm and Hunger of Hadar, are also recommended. The enemy’s primary objective is to reach and damage the portal, so the longer players delay their approach, the better. If the portal remains undamaged after four rounds, Halsin will emerge with Thaniel in his custody. The remaining enemies should be defeated at this point, though a bug may require players to eliminate any remaining undead. Players must then return to camp and converse with Halsin.
How to Defeat Oliver:

Back at camp, Halsin discloses that Thaniel is injured in a way unique to a spirit. Ketheric Thorm’s curse divided Thaniel into two, with one half remaining in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Halsin now offers to join the party as a full member, not just a companion.
The second portion of Thaniel is Oliver, whom players may have previously encountered while exploring the eastern side of the map. Oliver’s residence is northeast of the Shadowed Battlefield waypoint. During the initial encounter, Oliver challenges players to a game of Hide and Seek. However, players who have already rescued Thaniel can bypass this side quest with specific dialogue options.
When players approach, Oliver becomes confrontational and enters a portal leading to the west side of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, under the stronger Shadow Curse. Players should ensure they have an active Moonlantern or Pixie Blessing, as this is required to traverse the area. Players can also reach Oliver’s location by circumventing the long route, located beneath a large statue in the town square.
Upon reaching Oliver, he initiates combat. Oliver summons “Mummy” and “Daddy,” unique wraiths, and shields himself with the Nightdome barrier. The Nightdome resists nonmagical weapon damage and is immune to various damage types, making Radiant and Force attacks the most effective. Attacking the Nightdome is ill-advised due to its Cursed Vengeance ability, causing damage dealt to it to rebound.
Players should focus on battling Mummy, Daddy, and the waves of summoned one-hit-point “friends.” Each parent inflicts 60 damage on the dome, while each friend deals 10 damage. Multiple waves of friends must be defeated, but they pose little threat and can be quickly vanquished.
Once the Nightdome is eliminated, Oliver surrenders. Players can interact with Oliver, and depending on their dialogue choices, they can be friendly or confrontational. Regardless of the chosen path, Oliver decides to reunite with Thaniel. Returning to camp, Thaniel awaits alongside Halsin. The land’s spirit is now healed, but players must face Ketheric Thorm to permanently dispel the Shadow Curse.
