Unveiling the mechanics and usage of the High-Frequency Blade, a brief yet impactful weapon in Metal Gear Solid 2

Metal Gear Solid’s success owes much to its diverse gameplay, with Metal Gear Solid 2 exemplifying this range admirably. Within its story-driven campaign, players encounter an array of missions, including bomb disposal, escort tasks, and a notable segment that introduces the High-Frequency Blade (HF Blade) – a special weapon that momentarily enhances gameplay.

This guide proves indispensable for players, offering vital insights into mastering the High-Frequency Blade in Metal Gear Solid 2. Although it lacks the versatility seen in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, this mechanic’s smooth execution within a singular game segment remains remarkable.

Acquiring the High-Frequency Blade

Players traverse a significant portion of the story as Raiden before gaining access to the HF Blade. Upon progressing through the Big Shell section and moving onto Arsenal Gear while captive, they eventually navigate the facility in a state of undress.

Once Raiden exits the torture room, a large hall housing Tengu Soldiers awaits. The exit, located on the second level’s northeast corner, marks the pivotal moment. While maneuvering in this area, responding to calls from the Colonel leads to the encounter between Raiden and Snake, procuring the High-Frequency Blade.

Mastering the Blade’s Techniques

Here’s a breakdown of the High-Frequency Blade’s mechanics:

  • Control the blade’s movements using the right analog stick.
  • Moving the right analog stick up and down executes vertical swings.
  • Sideways movements with the right analog stick trigger horizontal swings.
  • A full circular motion executes a sweeping 360-degree blade maneuver.
  • Clicking the right analog stick performs an impaling motion, often resulting in instant enemy elimination.

Defensive Strategy Against Bullets

Activating a defensive stance by holding the left bumper (L1 on PlayStation) enables Raiden to deflect most bullets with the blade. However, shotgun blasts can still knock him down, and melee attacks remain a threat.

Non-Lethal Mode

Switch to non-lethal mode by pressing the weapon button (square on PlayStation), indicated by a blue icon in the weapon box. Despite this, the impaling motion remains lethal, crucial knowledge for those pursuing a non-lethal playthrough.

Final Considerations

Equipping or unequipping the HF Blade triggers a brief animation, leaving Raiden momentarily vulnerable. Unfortunately, unlocking the blade for use in other parts of the story isn’t feasible in new games. However, in the VR missions, the Ninja character wields a similar sword as a playable option.
