While the game’s main focus is on intense missions and encounters, players can also enjoy the city’s quieter activities when there’s no major event happening. Whether you’re collecting Mewmew stamps in Blazewood or simply exploring the surroundings, switching characters offers a fresh way to experience the game. Thanks to the 1.2 patch, this feature is now available for players to use at their convenience.

How to Change Characters in Zenless Zone Zero
Swapping characters is a simple process. Follow these steps to change your character while exploring:
- Open the Time-of-Day Menu: In the top-left corner of the screen, you’ll find the time-of-day display. Click on this icon or press the T key on your keyboard (or use the touchpad if you’re playing with a DualSense controller).
- Access the Character Selection Menu: Once you’ve opened the time-of-day display, navigate to the Character Selection menu.
- Choose Your Character: From this menu, you can switch between Belle, Wise, and any other Agents you’ve unlocked. Select the character you want to use, then hit the confirm button to finalize your choice.
You can change characters as often as you’d like, but be aware that, at the moment, the list of selectable Agents is quite limited. Currently, only Caesar, Burnice, and Yanagi are available for city exploration. However, it’s expected that more 5-star characters will become available in the future, although it’s unclear whether characters like Soldier 11 or Nicole will ever be included.
Important Limitations to Keep in Mind
While character swapping adds a fun layer to city exploration, there are a few important limitations to keep in mind:
- Cosmetic Only: Switching characters while exploring is purely cosmetic. Even if you choose another Agent, interacting with any NPC will automatically revert you back to the first Phaethon sibling you selected at the beginning of the game. The game will continue as if you’re still using your original character.
- Restricted Features: Certain game features, like the selfie camera, won’t be available when you’re using an Agent. However, if you’re playing as one of the Phaethon siblings, you can still access the selfie camera.
Future Updates and Content
While it’s still unclear whether HoYoverse will allow all characters in Zenless Zone Zero to be used during city exploration, the developers have confirmed plans for an exciting new feature. In the October devstream, they announced an upcoming Agent Accompany Mode, where players will be able to spend more time with their favorite characters while going about their daily activities in New Eridu. This feature will offer new interactions and will be separate from the current hangout system in the game.
